Later this month the Coles Funeral Directors team is taking on the challenging task of getting the people of Cardiff talking about death as part of the ‘Are We Ready?’ Dying Matters campaign.
On Friday 17th May 2019 (9:30-12:30), Coles Funeral Directors is holding a Community Coffee Morning to mark the opening of a new Bereavement Hub at their funeral home in Birchgrove. Inviting customers, local residents, clergy, businesses and councillors to join them for coffee, cake and conversation – the morning aims to get people talking about death and dying, and how best to prepare for it.
About 1% of the UK population dies each year, which means about 3500 will die in Cardiff in 2019, and each of those deaths will affect many more people in different ways. This in turn, has an impact on our community here in Cardiff.Whilst 35% of adults have made a will, only 13% have a funeral plan, and only 7% of the adult population has written down their end of life wishes or preferences about their care if they can’t make their own decisions
The goal of Coles’ Community Coffee Morning – and the founding goal of the local business’ new Bereavement Hub – is to create a friendly, welcoming space for people to ask questions and research their end of life and death care options, including care considerations, making a will, estate management, planning and financing a funeral, and coping with bereavement.
Francesca Coles, Director of Communications, explains: “We have long been supporters of Dying Matters here at Coles – and now, with the launch of our new Bereavement Hub, we have the ideal facility to nurture positive and supportive conversation around death, dying and bereavement all the year round. Talking about death can be a bit awkward at first, but it is something we all have to face. And ultimately, talking about death makes it easier to plan for and to deal with when it happens.”
Founder and Director of Coles Funeral Directors, Gareth Coles, adds: “It’s so important for us as a local business that we not only care for the dead, but support those dealing with and preparing for death – and to help the people of Cardiff understand the emotional and financial importance of planning for the inevitable.”
Coles’ Community Coffee Morning to mark the launch of Cardiff’s new Bereavement Hub is one of hundreds of events taking place across England & Wales for Dying Matters Awareness Week, which runs from 13th– 19thMay.
