Earlier this week we were at Cardiff City Stadium meeting with Care & Nursing professionals from all over Cardiff and the surrounding areas who gathered together for their annual ‘Care Roadshow’. The seminars this year focussed on the significant changes in the sector including funding, recruitment and government policy.Margaret Rooney of Care Wales provided particularly interesting insight into regulation of the Social Care (Wales) Act 2016. But what the day provided more than anything was a glimpse into the many and varied challenges that Care professionals face on a daily basis…
Despite these challenges, here in Cardiff, we’re very privileged to have many quality Nursing & Care Homes in the vicinity, giving us a choice of location at the time of need. This is especially comforting when you consider that the vast majority of us will spend our final years in care. In fact, it is predicted that by 2040, 76% of people will live their final days in care homes, nursing homes and hospices.
Anna Bone, lead author of a significant piece of recent research on this subject underlined the important role that care homes play in end-of-life care: “If we are to continue enabling people to die in their preferred place, it is essential to invest more in care homes and community health services.”
We couldn’t agree more; especially regarding the fact that we, as a community, should be enabling people to die, not in hospital, but in their preferred place.
Working in the heart of the Cardiff community, the Coles team has seen the vital role that care homes play in nursing the elderly through their final years. We’ve also seen how when nursing and care homes lose a resident, it can be as difficult for the staff and residents as it is for the families of the deceased. It’s why in our work with the bereaved, we take the time to find out about their loved one’s life, right up to their final days – so we can provide support to all involved.
Building positive relationships with care providers in our community has long been important work for us here at Coles Funeral Directors – and contributing to the Care Roadshow on Tuesday was just a small show of our appreciation of, and our commitment to supporting care professionals.
As recommended at the conference, if you’re looking at nursing, care, hospice or end-of-life facilities in Cardiff, it’s worth considering a registered provider and any recent inspection reports.
It also might be worth considering discussing a pre-arranged or pre-paid funeral plan with your loved one as you go through the process of arranging care and getting their affairs in order. Far from being morbid, you’ll be amazed at the comfort it can provide – find out more >
